Meet the Team

Dr. Alex McVey - CEO



Alex has 6 years experience working in microbiology laboratories and designed and built the first generation of our automation devices. He is responsible for creating and overseeing the design and execution of our strategy to turn our innovative prototypes into products for the microbiology and life sciences sector. Alex was a Royal Society of Edinburgh Enterprise Fellow between Apr-20 and Mar-21 and has led the company since formation in February 2020.

Prof. Teuta Pilizota - CTO

Teuta is a self-confessed workaholic and CTO of OGI Bio and is responsible for designing and co-ordinating development of the innovative new devices that OGI Bio are creating. She has more than 15 years experience of working and leading world-class microbiology laboratories. Teuta is a world-leader in cell morphology and an expert in optical microscopy. In her spare time, Teuta is Professor of Biophysics at the University of Edinburgh where the technology that OGI Bio is developing was originally developed.

Jim Cardle - Operations Manager

Jim joined the team in March 2021 as our first commercially focussed team member. He oversees all product development coming from Teuta’s R&D department and is responsible for creating products from these innovative ideas. the development teams ideas to the market. He has a wealth of experience from years in the manufacturing sector in both large and small organisations.

Jack Hocking - R&D Scientist

Jack has recently joined the team after completing his PhD in Biophysics with Teuta at the University of Edinburgh. He is currently working on exciting new modules to extend the control and analytical parameters of our systems.

Francesca Galdi - R&D Scientist

Francesca joined OGI Bio in February 2021, but like other members of the team had been involved in development for a quite a while before that. Francesca is currently working on developing exciting new sensors and tools to expand the range of measurements that are available in our systems.

Christy Simpson - R&D Scientist

Christy joined the team in July 2022 to bolster our R&D ability. He brings a broad range of expertise in optics, physics, engineering and data analysis to the team and will be working on bringing exciting new modules and features to the market.

Wei Zhou - Electronics Design Engineer

Wei joined OGI Bio in Jun 2022 to drive our product development. He is responsible for ensuring that our electronics works.

Guido Gastaldi - Product Development Engineer

Guido joined OGI Bio in September 2022 to drive our product development. The vital link between the R&D and manufacturing team Guido is tasked with realising the concepts and innovation that come from our team to user centred products that seamlessly fit with our existing product range.

Paul McCran - Manufacturing Technician

Paul joined the team in April 2021 to take responsibility for the manufacture and assembly of our devices. He has a wealth of experience in electronic and mechanical assembly and makes sure that every single device that comes out of our factory is ready to make your life easier.

Helping OGI Bio revolutionise microbiology

Stephen Roe - Chairman

Stephen is an experienced Executive in the manufacturing and life sciences sectors. He has vast experience of working and managing SME and start-up companies including Advanced Microwave Technologies, Spanoptic Ltd and Optos. Stephen was formerly the Chair of the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC) Scientific Advisory Board.

Andrew Murphy - Non-Executive Director

Andrew joined the board in Q2 2022 following our Seed round. He is an experienced Private Equity Partner, Founder CEO, Chairman and Investor. Andrew has wide experience in a range of sectors including life science innovation, manufacturing, distribution, commercialisation and scaling. He founded Sliante Healthcare, Vitro Software and Claimsure and was a co-founder and Chairman of Robotify Labs. Andrew is also a partner at erisbeg and Director of Medray Group and HealthXL.

Michiel Smith - Non-Executive Director

Michiel is an experienced Non-Executive Director and Investor. He is the gatekeeper of Apollo Informal Investments and serves as Non-Executive Director with several different start-ups. He was born in the Netherlands where he obtained a master's degree in Financial Business Economics and a post graduate master's in Financial Analysis.
